Was Mary Magdalene a Sex Worker?

Mary Magdalene is often presented as the repentant prostitute. The one who lived a life of harlotry and sin but was healed by Jesus and so became his devotee. There’s all kinds of problems with this. Firstly, it has a very negative view of sexuality in general, and women’s sexuality in particular. Secondly, there’s no actual precedent in any of the primary sources for that. In the video below Kayleen and I talk about sex work, following Jesus, purity culture, and how to uncover the true Mary Magdalene from centuries of church propaganda.

This is part 2/3 of a series on Mary Magdalene and you can check out part 1/3 by clicking here. You can learn more about Kayleen’s work by clicking here. I hope you enjoy it!
